BEATING CANCER THROUGH:

DAY 1: HOPE, OPTIMISM, AND A FIGHTING SPIRIT

Focus on the parts of your body that are working properly, not on the cancer. Since you are alive enough to read this book, then something and perhaps quite a bit are working in your body. Give thanks for everything that you can think of. Thanksgiving is a healing balm on the body and soul.

What are your priorities in life? Have they changed since finding out about your cancer diagnosis? Have they changed for the better? Is it possible that cancer has become a life-threatening, yet valuable wakeup call for you?

We are all going to die. The question is not “if”, but rather “when”. For cancer patients, sometimes this “when” becomes a more immediate issue. But our finite lives should be an issue for all of us, all of the time. Life is precious. Not to be wasted. Many of us cram our days with minutia, trivial details. We spend too much time worrying about insignificant events and lose sight of the real issues in life:

  • be here now
  • value your mission
  • cherish your friends and family
  • savor sunsets and sunrises
  • soak up the beauty and music and laughter and play that is all around you, but drowned out by the cacophony of crass commercialism
  • be at peace with your Creator, however you conceive that Higher Power

People beat cancer all the time. But fear of death is not a reason to live. What do you want them to say at your funeral? “Look, I think she’s moving!!” Not going to happen. Begin today with a renewed sense of purpose and proper perspective for the truly memorable things in life. Build a fighting “can-do” spirit that will serve you well for the coming journey of treating your cancer. Find a “co-patient”, a loved one, or family member who is so supportive that they will keep you motivated when you have run out of steam.

Be enthusiastic. The word “enthusiasm” comes from the Greek words meaning “God within”. With joy, enthusiasm, appreciation, and altruism, we literally become a conduit for God’s life itself.

DAY 2: KNOWLEDGE, OPTIONS, DATA GATHERING

While your doctor who made the cancer diagnosis may have a plan for you, it is probably not the only therapy that is appropriate for your cancer and may not even be the best therapy. You need to explore your options. In today’s society, getting information is easier than ever before. Get on the Internet and spend a few hours gathering data and phone numbers on who can help you with your particular cancer. The more knowledge that you have on the treatment and curing of your cancer, the more likely you are to make the right decision on which “wagon master” to choose for your vital treatment ahead.

Consider hyperthermia as primary or adjunctive therapy for your cancer. The following can provide a detailed report on doctors around the world who have a successful track record in treating your cancer:

DAY 3: THE POWER OF NUTRITIONAL SYNERGISM

Synergism means that 1 + 1 = 3 or 500, but a whole lot more than 2. Synergism tells us that the combined efforts of certain factors yield more than what would have been expected. Do not rely on any “magic bullet” nutrient to beat your cancer. There are no such things. Your body needs the 50 recognized essential nutrients plus a couple of hundred other valuable nutrients that can only be found in a wholesome diet that is supplemented with the right nutrients.

“What is the most important part of a car?” Some people answer: “The engine.” Fine. Then I will give you an engine and let’s see you drive it home. A car, like a healthy human body, is composed of many essential parts. The most important part of the car is the one that is not working. In building a house, all of the raw materials must arrive in the proper ratio at the proper time, otherwise you cannot build a sturdy home. Same thing with the human body. Nutritional synergism says that when you gather the right nutrients together at the right time in the right ratio, the body becomes a lean, mean, disease-fighting machine. Nothing less will do in your quest to beat cancer.

DAY 4: STARVE THE CANCER

Cancer is a sugar-feeder. The scientists call it an “obligate glucose metabolizer”. You can slow cancer growth by lowering the amount of fuel available to the tumor cells. Americans have become humming birds in our constant consumption of sweet fluids and foods. The resulting constant high blood glucose levels yield many diseases, including cancer, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and yeast infections. Trying to beat cancer while eating a diet that constantly raises blood glucose is like trying to put out a forest fire while someone nearby is throwing gasoline on the trees.

Stop eating sugar. Eat very few sweet foods, including high glycemic fruits. Begin an exercise program to burn blood glucose down to a manageable level. Your cancer is not going to be happy as you begin to starve it. You will develop sugar cravings worse than you currently have. Ignore them and push through the discomfort.

Make fish and colorful vegetables the staples in your diet. Eat small amounts of fresh fruits at a mixed meal, which will blunt the rises in blood glucose. Use cinnamon liberally, since it helps to stabilize blood glucose. Take supplements of chromium and magnesium. I have yet to see a cancer patient beat the disease who continued to load up on the average amounts of sugar in our diet, which is 140 pounds per year per person.

DAY 5: AVOID MALNUTRITION

Cancer is a wasting disease. Over 40% of cancer patients actually die from malnutrition, not from the cancer. Cancer generates chemicals that lower appetite while increasing calorie needs. The net effect is that many cancer patients begin to lose weight. You cannot fight a life-threatening disease while malnourished. You need all the proper nutrition you can get to feed your immune system, which is your army assigned to killing the cancer cells. The backbone of the immune system is protein. If you cannot eat solid foods, then try the Dragon-slayer shake mentioned later in this book.

DAY 6: NUTRITION + MEDICINE= IMPROVED RESULTS

While chemotherapy and radiation can kill cancer cells, these therapies are general toxins against your body cells also. A well-nourished cancer patient can protect healthy cells against the toxic effects of chemo and radiation, thus making the cancer cells more vulnerable to the medicine. Proper nutrition can make chemo and radiation more of a selective toxin against the cancer and less damaging to the patient.

DAY 7: TURBOCHARGE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

Your immune system consists of 20 trillion cells that compose your police force and garbage collectors. The immune system is responsible for killing the bad guys, any cells that are not participating in the processes of your body, including cancer, yeast, bacteria, virus, and dead cells. “Kill the bad guys and take out the trash.” That is what your immune system is supposed to do. But since you have cancer, something is wrong with your immune system: usually either stress, toxic burden, or malnutrition.

Eat well and take professionally designed nutrition supplements. Lower your stress levels. Use guided imagery to imagine your immune cells like sharks gobbling up the cancer cells. This technique really works!! Detoxify your body. The average American body has 1,000 times more heavy toxic metals than our primitive ancestors before the dawning of the industrial age. Toxins shut down the ability of the immune system to mount a good battle against the cancer cells.

As your cells divide billions of times daily, mistake cells are the inevitable consequence. These mistake cells sometimes grow into cancer cells, which your immune system recognizes as being defective and then gobbles them up like Pac Man. The average adult gets 6 bouts of cancer in a lifetime, yet only 42% of Americans will end up in a cancer hospital. The other 58% had a respectable immune system, which protected the person against defective cells rising up to become palpable life-threatening cancer. Get your immune system working and the end of your cancer is in sight. Nutrition products that have demonstrated an ability to bolster immune functions include: colostrum extracts (lactoferrin, transfer factor), whey extracts, aloe extracts, mushroom extracts (Maitake, AHCC), yeast cell wall extracts (1,3 beta glucan), IP-6 (phytic acid), ImmKine (Aidan 480-446-8181), and Essiac tea.

DAY 8: THE HEALING POWER OF WHOLE FOODS

It is amazing how simple the answer to cancer can be. Our brilliant researchers have spent 33 years and $50 billion of your tax dollars wrestling with the complex issue of curing cancer. Yet Nature has been solving the dilemma for thousands of years. All of us get cancer all of the time, yet magical ingredients in a whole food diet are there to help the body beat cancer. Ellagic acid from berries induces “suicide” in the cancer cells. Lycopenes from tomatoes help to suppress cancer growth. Genistein in soy, glutathione in green leafy vegetables, and S-allyl cysteine in garlic are examples of the new scientifically-validated cancer fighters of the 21st century.

You don’t have to wait for 7 years while some drug company goes through the $800 million drug approval process, nor for FDA approval, nor for a doctor’s prescription for some drug that has many toxic side effects and costs thousands of dollars each month. These miracle anti-cancer agents are waiting patiently at your nearby grocery store and health food store.

  • Eat foods in as close to their natural state as is possible.
  • Eat as much colorful vegetables as your colon can tolerate.
  • If a food will not rot or sprout, then throw it out.
  • Shop the perimeter (outside aisles) of the grocery store.

DAY 9: NUTRITIOUS AND DELICIOUS RECIPES

Now that you understand the importance of eating wholesome foods to beat your cancer, you will need some tips on making this food palatable. See Noreen’s chapter on “Nutritious & Delicious” for many great tasting recipes. I have hosted many a class with hundreds of cancer patients where we would tell them what foods might help them to beat their cancer. Women, in general, seem more receptive to these new cooking ideas. Men, in general, seem less interested in changing 50 years of eating habits. Gravy is not a beverage, contrary to popular belief in America. Those same men who turned their nose up at our recipe suggestions are now dead.

You are trying to take simple food straight from Nature and use healthy seasonings to make a quick and tasty meal. Crock pot, pressure cooker, steaming, and grilling are all wonderful means of cooking nourishing foods. Some produce is most nutritious when eaten raw, such as many vegetables and all fruit. A high speed blender can take any leftovers or foods that are not appealing and blend them in to a smoothie drink or a nice soup.

Try a couple of boiled eggs with a bowl of oatmeal and a half cup of cantaloupe for breakfast. Move on to a lunch with grilled chicken breast sandwich with spinach and onions, wild rice, a bowl of deep-colored fresh vegetables with homemade Italian dressing, and a half cup of raspberries for dessert. A sample dinner might be grilled halibut with lemon, baked sweet potatoes, fresh tomato slices with onions and homemade Italian dressing, and a dessert of a half cup of fresh papaya.

This is all nourishing food that you can learn to savor, easy to prepare, and easy to find at your local grocery store. And it will help you to beat your cancer.

DAY 10: HERBAL MEDICINE

There are thousands of herbs that have been used for thousands of years to treat cancer. None are guaranteed cures for all cancers, but many are non-toxic boosters of immune function and detoxification pathways. If you want just the basic herb that all cancer patients should be using daily, then start with garlic–as a food, seasoning, and/or pill supplement.

Many other herbs merit attention, as you will see in the chapter on herbs. Astragalus, echinacea, goldenseal, licorice, ginseng, ginkgo, ginger, Rhodiola rosea, and cat’s claw are on the golden hit parade of herbs to help you toward recovery from cancer. Work with a professional who can help guide you toward which herb is best for your disease, your therapy, your wallet, and your stomach tolerances.

DAY 11: HEALTHY FATS

While too much fat and the wrong kind of fat have been killing millions of Americans for the past 50 years, we are now finding a new form of fat malnutrition: deficiencies of the essential fats. Fish oil, borage or primrose oil, flax oil, conjugated linoleic acid (from the meat and milk of ruminants like cows and sheep), and shark liver oil are all fats that can help you to beat your cancer. For a simple starter, begin taking a few capsules of fish oil daily, preferably basic cod liver oil with all the good vitamin A and D still intact. You can also make a delicious, healthy Italian salad dressing by using flax oil, olive oil, water, vinegar, and some seasonings.

The right fats in your diet will feed the precious pathways for beneficial prostaglandins, which are crucial to beating cancer. Healthy fats line the cell membranes and help to lower blood glucose by making insulin more effective. Healthy fats make the immune cells more likely to recognize and destroy cancer cells.

DAY 12: MINERALS

Before modern agriculture, farmers would use manure and compost to nourish the soil before planting the crops. Today, we use only nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (N:P:K) as the basic fertilizer. With each passing harvest, the American soils and our bodies become more deficient in essential minerals for health. For instance, scientists have found that a dust speck of selenium (200 micrograms daily) can lower cancer incidence by 60% and raise immune functions dramatically. Deprive animals of magnesium and they spontaneously develop lymphoma. Some of our cancer epidemic in America is due to our serious and widespread deficiency in essential minerals.

Buy a basic mineral supplement, containing decent amounts of calcium, magnesium, chromium, and selenium. Add some kelp, which is rich in the trace minerals that are found both in the ocean and supposed to be found in your body fluid.

DAY 13: VITAMINS

Vitamins are the factory workers that get things done. Calories are the fuel for energy, and minerals are part of the structure or help vitamins to get things done. Most Americans are deficient in vitamins, even on the basic survival Recommended Dietary Allowance level. For a starter package, buy a quality broad spectrum vitamin supplement; then add extra vitamin C (1-4 grams per day), E (200-800 mg/d), green tea capsules, curcumin, and fish oil. DAY 14: PROBIOTICS–FRIENDLY BACTERIA

Professor Elie Metchnikoff won a Nobel prize in 1908 for his work on the immune system. He later discovered the bacteria that makes yogurt (lactobacillus) and declared “Death begins in the colon.” Indeed, it may. And the colon and gut of most Americans are under siege by unfriendly organisms and free radicals.

When we eat nourishing food, our well-established colony of friendly bacteria in the colon eats yeast like a bird munches on insects. Many Americans eat too much fat, too much sugar, not enough fiber, and very little probiotic food (like yogurt and tempeh); take antibiotics (which wipe out all bacteria in the body, including the friendly bacteria); and subject ourselves to stress– all of which affects the balance of power between good and bad microorganisms in the gut. The net effect is an overgrowth of yeast, along with a deficiency of friendly bacteria that feed the immune system via the lining of the intestines. The yeast, which are there to degrade feces upon elimination, become hateful dictators in the gut. Many health problems result from what is called “dysbiosis” of the gut, or not having the right kind of microorganisms in charge.

Eat more fiber and no white sugar. Drink plenty of clean water. Eat yogurt daily or take a probiotic supplement. Make sure that you have a daily bowel movement. Use gentle herbal laxatives, like senna, if necessary. After 40 years of poor diet and chronic constipation, some people need colon flushing. Find a qualified expert to help on this issue.

At least 40% of our immune system surrounds the gastro-intestinal tract. For better or for worse, the status of our gut will begin the healing or the deterioration of a cancer patient.

DAY 15: WATER

Only one substance is found in all forms of life: water. Our bodies and the earth’s surface are composed of 2/3 water. Water is the most amazing substance on earth, providing the fluid of life in your body and the bathing solution for all cells in your body. Yet, most Americans do not get enough water and are drinking contaminated water.

Our water pollution situation in this country has been called “a ticking time bomb.” by the Environmental Protection Agency. We have used our rivers, lakes, and oceans as if they were sewers to dump unconscionable amounts of toxins. And we end up drinking that stuff. Pollution in our water supply is part of the reason for our growing cancer epidemic in this country.

Buy yourself a good water filter system and install it on your kitchen tap. Dual stage carbon filtration may cost $100-$200, with reverse osmosis costing two or three times that much. If need be, buy bottled water from a respectable vendor. Some bottled water is merely bottled city tap water with sugar added to make it taste better. Drink enough water to dilute your urine so that it is nearly clear in color and inoffensive in odor. Chronic dehydration first shows up in wrinkled skin, poor concentration, constipation, frequent infections, and eventually may appear as cancer. Water is your friend. Drink lots of clean water.

DAY 16: BREATHING

Cancer is an anaerobic growth. Healthy cells in your body are aerobic, meaning that they need oxygen. Cancer hates well-oxygenated tissues of the body. Lung tissue, which is well oxygenated, develops cancer as the result of smoking carcinogens and excessive “rusting” of tissue in the absence of antioxidants to protect the lung tissue. I have found lung cancer in non-smokers to be quite reversible if the person is willing to follow the guidelines in this book.

Of all nutrients required by the human body, oxygen is the most essential. We can go weeks and even months without food, days without water, but only a few minutes without oxygen. We are aerobic creatures by design. Cancer is the opposite. Unfortunately, many Americans breathe shallowly, thinking that sucking in our stomach is more important than diaphragm breathing to fully oxygenate our tissues.

Get some exercise. Do some yoga. Start breathing properly all the time. Lay on the floor with a book on your stomach. Begin breathing by pushing the book up and sucking in air to the bottom of your lungs. Continue breathing by filling the lungs fully and expanding your chest. Reverse the process on exhaling. This “belly breathing” will fully oxygenate your body to help make it less friendly to cancer cells, like shining sunlight on a vampire.

DAY 17: CHANGE THE UNDERLYING CAUSE

No one with a headache is suffering from a deficiency of aspirin. And no one with cancer has a deficiency of chemo or radiation. While these therapies might temporarily reduce tumor burden, they do not change the underlying cause of the disease.

Mrs. Jones might be suffering from metastatic breast cancer because, in her case, she is still hurting from a hateful divorce of 2 years ago, which drives her catecholamines into a stress mode and depresses her immune system; she goes to bed on a box of high sugar cookies each night; she has a deficiency of fish oil, zinc, and vitamin E; and she has an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone in her body. Her oncologist may remove the breasts, give her Tamoxifen to bind up estrogen, and administer chemo and radiation; but none of these therapies deals with the underlying causes of the disease. And it will come back unless these driving forces for the disease are reversed.

Find a nutritionally-oriented doctor (listed in the back of this book) and determine what got you into this condition, which will provide a detailed map on how to get you out of this situation.

DAY 18: IS CANCER AN INFECTION?

There is compelling evidence that some or many cancers are advanced infections. Medline literature shows us that stomach cancer is often from the bacteria Helicobacter pylori, liver cancer from the infection hepatitis, cervical cancer from the infection human papilloma virus, and more. Hence, the need to address the infection is crucial in reversing the cancer. Yeast (fungi), virus, bacteria, mycoplasma, and parasites are among the critters that dwell within us and can create life-threatening diseases, like cancer. There are over 400,000 different strains of yeast, of which 400 can cause diseases in humans. Yeast is the “undertaker and the ecologist”, decomposing all of life back to mother earth. Unfortunately, due to lowered vitality we are becoming premature victims of yeast and other infections. Just like wolves attack the weakest of the herd, opportunistic pathogens attack the weakest of cells within our body. Your mission is to make your body so full of wellness that there is no room for illness.

Take a simple urine test to see if you have a yeast overgrowth (Great Plains Labs 913-341-8949) or blood test (ImmmunoSciences 310-657-1077) to see if you have other infections. Your doctor will then:

  • kill the infectious organism with prescription medication and/or nutrition supplements
  • starve the yeast, by eating a diet that lowers simple carbohydrate intake
  • make the environment uncomfortable for the infectious agent, by bolstering your body’s defense mechanisms

DAY 19: BEATING CANCER SYMPTOMS

“If the heat don’t kill you then the humidity will.” “And if the cancer don’t kill you then the side effects will.” Actually, both are worthy of your attention. Nausea, depression, insomnia, constipation, diarrhea, anemia, weakness, fatigue, pain, and more can be common side effects of cancer. Depending on how advanced your cancer is, your medical therapies being given, your general health, etc., you can reduce symptoms to a tolerable level. See chapter 27 in this book. This is crucial because some cancer patients just give up, after suffering too much for too long. Much of this suffering can be reduced by allopathic and naturopathic treatments. Pain and discomfort induce stress, which lowers immune functions, which can be a real show-stopper for cancer patients. Pain management is crucial for many cancer patients. Get help.

DAY 20: SELECTIVELY REDUCE TUMOR BURDEN

It is very likely that your body needs some help in removing 10 or 20 trillion cancer cells, in order to reduce tumor burden enough to get your own anti-cancer defenses up and running. Working with the information that you gathered on day 2 (know your options of treatment), begin the process of debulking your tumor. Surgery, chemo, radiation, immune therapies, and hyperthermia are all common options. The key here is “restrained” tumor debulking. Anyone can kill all the cancer cells in your body. A thimble full of arsenic will do the job. No more cancer cells. No more you.

Surgeons used to take the aggressive cowboy approach and remove all surrounding tissue near the tumor. Then they found that by removing too many lymph nodes, that lymphedema, or pooling of lymph fluid, could create such pain that amputation of limbs became necessary. “Remove the target organ” was the battle cry of many an oncology surgeon. The hemi-ectomy was the pinnacle of aggressive surgery, where the cancer patient with a sarcoma below the waist had the body removed from the waist down. The survival statistics of these poor victims were no different than sarcoma patients who did nothing. Pelvic exenteration, taking out all internal organs near the tumor, yielded no improvement in survival curves and a serious reduction in quality of life for the remaining months. “Maximum sub-lethal chemo” has been the mantra of many oncologists. Bring the patient to the therapeutic brink of death, and then salvage the patient if possible.

Find a doctor who will work with you on RESTRAINED tumor debulking. Just like the childhood fable of Goldilocks, you want a doctor to remove–not too much, not too little, but just the right amount of tumor mass. Your oncologist can be the beginning of your demise or can give your body some breathing room so that your natural host defense mechanisms can take over. Choose your doctor “wagon master” wisely.

DAY 21: ILLNESS AS A TEACHING TOOL

What have you learned since being diagnosed with cancer? How have your priorities changed? Do you see life differently? Do you appreciate sunsets and friends more? If so, then you are heading in the right direction toward healing. If not, then wake up.

In working with over 3,000 cancer patients individually and speaking to many thousands of cancer patients, there is a clear message in the appearance of a serious disease in anyone’s life. Illness can be an unavoidable teaching tool. You can ignore advice from friends and loved ones. But you cannot ignore a terminal diagnosis.

I have had my own health challenges and each has taught me much. We are here on this earth for a very limited amount of time. What are we doing with our precious time and talents? Are you a human being or a human doing? Do you hate more than you love? Take more than you give? See the glass as half empty rather than half full? Spend more time contemplating regrets than your dreams? Treat people with respect or victimize them? Understand your unique skills that the world needs?

Cancer is more than just a physical systemic disease. And it requires more than just good nutrition and medicine to cure. It is a wake up call of the highest magnitude. Cancer patients who heed the call become better people having experienced this acid bath, this gauntlet, this baptism of fire. Many a cancer patient has stood in front of an audience and said: “Cancer is the best thing that ever happened to me.” If you are nodding in agreement with this statement, then you are moving toward healing.

In Oriental language, “crisis” is written with two characters: one meaning “danger”, the other character meaning “opportunity”. Cancer is truly a dangerous disease. Nearly 600,000 Americans die from this disease annually. Yet, for thousands of cancer patients, the disease has forced them into rearranging their priorities and lifestyle. Respect your body, your “temple of the Holy Spirit”. Fill your mind and your hours so full of joy, passion, helpfulness, music, laughter, play, worship, thanksgiving, friends, family, and your work that there is no room left for cancer in your life. A diamond is nothing more than a piece of coal that was put under a lot of pressure. You can become a diamond through the healing of your cancer.

PATIENT PROFILE: BEAT ENDSTAGE TUBERCULOSIS

True story. The number one cause of death throughout most of the 19th century was tuberculosis. Galen Clark went to Yosemite Valley to die of endstage tuberculosis at age 42 in the fall of 1856. His doctor told him that coughing up chunks of his lungs meant he had up to 2-6 months to live. There was no cure for this disease. Clark reasoned that “If I’m going to die soon, then I’m going to die in Yosemite, the prettiest place I’ve ever seen.” He got happy. Scientists now tell us that happiness brings on the flow of endorphins, which supercharge our immune system and may slow down cancer.

Next, Galen Clark carved his own tombstone, thus accepting his mortality, a ritual that would give us all a better appreciation of our finite time on earth. He then started eating what was available in Yosemite in those days; clean and lean wild game, mountain trout, nuts, berries, vegetables, and lots of clean water. No sugar and no dairy products. He then began doing what he wanted to do, hiking and creating trails, in the place he treasured the most, Yosemite Valley. He didn’t die 6 months later, but rather 54 years later, just shy of his 96th birthday. He bolstered his “non-specific host defense mechanisms” with good thoughts and good nutrition.

It tells the story about a teenage girl who is in terminal stages of leukemia and how the younger sister (who has been genetically conceived to be a biological match for her sick sister) decides to fight her parents legally for the right to decide what to do with her own body, instead of giving up body parts to save her dying sister.  Be warned:  you must bring enough tissue to the cinema!

After the movie, I kept thinking to myself:  why is it that conventional medicine (oncology) does such a poor job with treating cancer?  In the 1970s, President Nixon of the United States declared war on cancer.  Yet despite the passage of nearly 40 years and billions of dollars spent in research, we are still far from finding a safe, effective cure on cancer.  The USA and other countries have successfully sent man to the moon and beyond.  But our best scientists cannot even control and tame a malignant growth inside our body successfully without doing further damage to the body.  What conventional oncology has to offer is surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.  These treatments don’t heal the body.  They may shrink the tumor for a while but after the treatment is over (assuming the patient survives), the cancer returns with a vengeance because the body’s own immune system is already severely weakened.  Yes, in the last few years, smart drugs have been developed which are supposed to target only the cancer cells and leave normal cells unharmed.  However, these drugs tend to be very, very expensive.  They are out of reach of ordinary folks, unless you are heavily insured.   It is sure to send most common folks into personal bankruptcy if they try those drugs.  Most of them only extend life by a matter of months (to quote Dr. Keith Block).

I have just come across a series of three short videos by Lorraine Day, MD, on the dangers of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.  I strongly encourage you all to watch it and learn of all the devastating effects of conventional cancer treatment.  Dr. Lorraine Day survived serious breast cancer by adopting a wholly natural program based on diet, detoxification and supplements.  She refused major surgery, chemotherapy and radiation and is still alive after 17 years.  She was formerly chief of orthopedic surgery at San Francisco General Hospital and an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco.

Treating Cancer – The Case For Exploring Alternatives

I am sure many of us must have been shocked and saddened by the news of the demise of the former DBS Bank CEO, Richard Stanley, who died at the age of 48 due to complications of leukemia.

It was reported that Mr. Stanley’s leukemia had actually responded well to chemotherapy but he died of an infection he caught that overwhelmed his severely weakened immune system, which is a common side effect of chemotherapy.

That is a polite way of saying the chemotherapy killed him quicker than his leukemia did.

Anyone who is aware of how most chemotherapeutic agents or radiation work will know that these conventional modalities wreak havoc on the body’s systems, organs, tissues and cells, indiscriminately killing both good and bad cells.  The immune system is severely weakened such that the body becomes highly susceptible to infectious agents such as viruses, bacteria and fungi.  Death can sometimes result from a simple infection.  Sadly, it is the patient’s immune system that is most responsible for whopping up cancer cells.

A business associate once recounted to me how his mother-in-law died because of a cold or flu following chemotherapy, again due to a severely weakened immune system.   There are many similar stories like these.

What would I do if I had cancer?  I would go to some of the best alternative/complementary cancer clinics in Germany, Mexico, USA or Japan to get holistic, natural treatment.  I would never touch chemotherapy or radiation with a 10-foot pole.  Surgery?  Perhaps I would consider it if the doctor promised only to remove the tumor and not other parts of my body.  And I would begin taking the supplements recommended on the Cancer Resources page immediately, while going on a very strict dietary regimen and begin coffee enemas once or twice a day.

Rebuttal to Mind Your Body’s Article: Vitamins draw more flak

I am sure many of you must have read the article that appeared in Mind Your Body, Nov 27, entitled, “Vitamins draw more flak.”

The effect of the article is to cast doubts among hundreds of thousands of faithful consumers of vitamin supplements as to the value of what they have been consuming.  It will undoubtedly also adversely affect the business of supplement distributors and retailers.

As usual, the NY Times-based article is heavily biased and intended to help drug companies sell more drugs for cardiovascular diseases and cancer.   There was no effort made to investigate the weaknesses of these studies and cite the many studies that have shown the benefits of these same supplements, when consumed in their natural form and in sufficiently high doses.

Please find below our rebuttal of your article.  Note that the first 2 studies cited both relate to the Physicians’ Health Study II conducted at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the same research center that was involved in the publication of a highly controversial paper that distorted the results of their research.

In the interest of providing Mind Your Body readers with fair, truthful and unbiased information, we have strongly urged the editor of MYB to publish the other side of the story.  Let’s wait and see if they will do this.

Most of the material below is extracted from the responses of the American Association for Health Freedom/Alliance for Natural Health and the Council for Responsible Nutrition to the Physicians’ Health Study II.

Use of Inferior/Synthetic Forms of Vitamins

Vitamin E is not a single substance, but a range of at least eight substances (tocopherols and tocotrienols).3 The different forms of “vitamin E” have distinct biological properties.4,5 The form of vitamin E used in the Sesso et al. study was synthetic dl-alpha-tocopherol. This is less effective than the natural forms, and is quite different in biological function and antioxidant activity than the predominant form in the diet6 (as found particularly in vegetable oils); using synthetic vitamin E thus minimises the possibility of finding benefit. Indeed, its use may interfere with the beneficial effects of natural vitamin E by competitively inhibiting or blocking receptor sites for the natural forms.7 The study also ignored the impacts of the all-important four tocotrienol isomers8 found in natural vitamin E.

The other vitamin evaluated in the Physicians’ Health Study II was vitamin C. This form was also synthetic and lacked the common synergists normally associated with good quality vitamin C supplements, namely citrus derived bioflavonoids, which have been associated with a reduction of heart disease risk factors such as blood triglycerides.9

The Beta Carotene used in the study was also synthetic – Lurotin.

Low Dosage

The vitamin E dose in the study (400 IU every other day) is insufficient to act as an antioxidant in humans. This study has no relevance to people taking natural tocopherols or tocotrienol supplements at appropriate doses. In other words, the study does not apply to people who supplement with vitamin E.

A dose of up to 500mg vitamin C would have minimal or no effect in preventing heart disease. The daily dose of vitamin C used by Sesso et al. (500mg) is only half a typical one-gram tablet, of the type popular with supplement users.  Dynamic flow levels of vitamin C, which may prevent heart disease, begin at daily intakes above about 3g per day, taken in divided doses (this is a minimum level – higher doses may be needed, depending on individual physiological requirements). A dose of 500mg will only marginally raise median blood plasma levels above the baseline level of 70 microM/L and thus be ineffective. For those in the study with pre-existing heart disease (754 men in a total population of 14641), the appropriate vitamin C intake is higher still.

Placebo Problems

A fundamental problem of applying randomised controlled trials to the field of nutrition; you cannot apply a true control given that all subjects are exposed to food, if not supplements, and any balanced diet contains substantial amounts of nutrients, many of which interact synergistically. In scientific terms, the occurrence of uncontrolled elements of the diet in both the control and treatment groups introduces confounding that is likely to interfere with any meaningful biological effects, particularly if the dosages are low, as they indeed were in the Physicians’ Health Study II. In addition to this, given that the study involves physicians, it is likely that the subjects, with their greater knowledge of health issues, would have consumed diets that are healthier than those of average Americans.

Fallacy of the Magic Bullet

Perhaps we need to revise our expectations that one single healthy habit [or pill] will serve as a ‘magic bullet’ and allow us to live disease-free-after all, one piece does not complete the whole puzzle, but we certainly don’t discard the piece just because it doesn’t fit in a particular spot. Within the research community and academia, we encourage scientists to engage in additional studies that are designed to answer questions about the effects of nutrients on chronic disease and explore the apparent inconsistencies created by the existing research. Scientists, policymakers, healthcare professionals and consumers alike should continue to question commonly accepted research models, such as: whether the current approach used in RCTs (randomised controlled trials) of studying nutrients in isolation is appropriate; whether observational data are adequate to make policy decisions as is the case with food; and whether we’re studying the appropriate populations or subgroups, with the appropriate dosage and combination of nutrients for the correct length of time are other questions. There are still many more questions to be answered. Science is constantly evolving and by shifting the current paradigm of disease research to a paradigm of nutrition and prevention, we can better aid consumers in living healthier lives.”

The Importance of Synergy and Biochemical Individuality

One explanation is that the effects of nutrients in the human body are complex and influenced by many variables. Understanding the causality of chronic disease is equally complex. RCTs may be inherently limited in their capacity to address the unique challenges presented by nutrients and dietary interventions. Nutrients appear to work best in combination with other nutrients, yet RCTs tend to examine effects of unique chemical molecules in isolation-which is how pharmaceuticals work. Further, in using RCTs to study nutrition questions, there is the challenge of being able to create a true control or placebo group. For example, in contrast to pharmaceuticals, it is both impossible and unethical to ensure participants in the control group are not exposed at any level to vitamins and minerals.

This leads us to the question, ‘what should consumers do?’ The best advice for consumers is to engage in a lifetime of healthy habits-like not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a well-balanced diet and appropriately supplementing with vitamins, regular exercise, and regular visits to a physician. These appear to be best practices. Vitamins play a vital role in promoting overall general health and fulfilling specific nutrition gaps. Despite the results from recent studies, there is additional research that suggests antioxidant vitamins may play a role in helping to lower the risk of chronic diseases. However, vitamin supplements are just one piece of the puzzle, which may be why we didn’t see the results we anticipated from the recent clinical trials.

Vested Interests

With three drug companies supplying the vitamins for the trial, namely BASF Corporation, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals and DSM Nutritional Products (formerly Roche Vitamins), maybe this was a surer way of protecting the drug companies’ core competence, which is clearly in the field of patented pharmaceuticals, rather than in unpatented synthetic vitamin products?   Even the researchers are known to have financial links with the pharmaceutical companies (see annexure).

Conclusion

Sesso and colleagues conclude that the results of their trial “provide no support for the use of these supplements in the prevention of cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and older men.” A more accurate conclusion might have been: the trial provides no evidence that supplementation of low doses of synthetic vitamin C and E, when taken by over 50-year-old physicians over a relatively short period of 10 years, has the capacity to prevent cardiovascular disease. However, as the study authors themselves concede, the initiation of supplementation may have been too late to significantly affect the aetiology of heart disease.

We have argued also that the low doses, inappropriate synthetic forms and absence of other natural nutrients and synergists in combination, would-quite predictably-not have the ability to prevent heart disease. Sesso et al’s trial was therefore a trial doomed to fail!

Nutrients do not “cure” disease in the traditional drug model of suppressing a symptom using a medication or an isolated synthetic active ingredient. Each individual has a unique need for nutrients, and they work synergistically, not by using a single nutrient as a magic bullet. Additionally, lifestyle is always the key factor in the prevention of chronic disease. Diet, exercise, and stress reduction must be included along with dietary supplements. The choice of just vitamin C and vitamin E, ignoring the omega-3 essential fatty acids or other nutrients that have profound heart-function benefits-like potassium, magnesium, coenzyme Q10, d-ribose, l-carnitine, nattokinase, vitamin D, vitamin K2, and aged garlic-seems simplistic and destined to produce a negative outcome. If the doctors continued to eat the processed American diet, remained inactive, continued to be stressed, and perhaps drank too much or ate too much bad fat or too many sweets, why would 500 mg. of vitamin C and 400 IU of vitamin E prevent heart disease or even cancer?

The form of the nutrient in the supplement is now known to be a key factor. As the Wall Street Journal noted in 1996, we may be taking the wrong form of vitamin E. Natural vitamin E, which contains many members of the tocopherol and tocotrienol family, has proven heart benefits. There is much published research, including that done at the Kenneth Jordan Heart Institute, which demonstrates that tocotrienol supplementation reverses plaque within six months. Why would the Harvard researchers use synthetic vitamin E and not a mixed tocopherol vitamin E with tocotrienols?

A presentation on PHSII at the American Association for Cancer Research meeting on November 16 offered similar findings: the daily use of 500 mg. of vitamin C and 400 IU of a synthetic isolate form of vitamin E had no impact on the risk of any type of cancer. However, nutrients like vitamin D, d-indole methane, the glucans from mushrooms, the mixed carotenoids, resveratrol from red grapes and wine, and phytochemcials from pomegranates (just to name a few) have considerable research to back up their use as cancer-fighters-as do other lifestyle changes like exercise.

Millions of Americans lose their lives to heart disease and cancer [the situation is no different in Singapore]; millions (if not billions) of dollars are spent in research with failed methodology. PHSII is a prime example of research money that has been badly wasted. The empowering news is that genes can be turned off and turned on preventing even heart disease and cancer. We need to keep hammering home the message of biochemical individuality using the proper forms of nutrients, the message that nutrients are adjuncts to wise lifestyle choices that include diet, exercise, and stress management.

The MYB article also mentioned that a trial on the use of Vitamin E and Selenium for the prevention of prostate cancer (the SELECT trial) was recently halted due to concerns that these supplements may be doing more harm than good.  What the article failed to highlight is that the National Cancer Institute themselves stated that there was no conclusive evidence that these supplements caused or aggravated prostate cancer and the results were probably due to chance.  Further, the article failed to investigate the form of selenium that was used – selenomethionine which had already been shown to be inferior to high-selenium yeast in its effect on prostate health.

And when will these researchers ever come to the realization that antioxidants like beta carotene, Vitamin C, E, selenium, zinc and CoQ10 work best as a team?  Without all the team players at adequate levels, they just don’t work effectively.

ABOUT BETA CAROTENE [From  Healthnotes.]

Natural beta-carotene, found in food, is made of two molecules-all trans beta-carotene and 9-cis beta-carotene.

Researchers originally saw no meaningful difference between natural and synthetic beta-carotene. This view was questioned when the link between beta-carotene-containing foods (all natural) and lung cancer prevention2 was not duplicated in studies using synthetic pills.3 In smokers, synthetic beta-carotene has apparently caused an increased risk of lung cancer4 5 6 and disease of the blood vessels7 in double-blind research. Animal research has begun to identify the ways in which synthetic beta-carotene might cause damage to lungs, particularly when animals are exposed to cigarette smoke.8

Much of natural beta-carotene is in the all trans molecule form-the same as synthetic beta-carotene. Moreover, much of the 9-cis molecule found only in natural beta-carotene is converted to the synthetic molecule before it reaches the bloodstream.9 Also, absorption of 9-cis beta-carotene appears to be poor,10 though some researchers question this finding.11

Despite the overlap between natural and synthetic forms, natural beta-carotene may possibly have activity that is distinct from the synthetic form. For example, studies in both animals12 and humans13 have shown that the natural form has antioxidant activity that the synthetic form lacks. Also, in one trial, pre-cancerous changes in people reverted to normal tissue with natural beta-carotene supplements, but not with synthetic supplements.14

Increasingly, doctors are recommending that people supplement only with natural beta-carotene.

NATURAL VITAMIN E DRAMATICALLY REDUCES HEART DISEASE

A new randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cardiovascular study evaluating natural vitamin E, synthetic vitamin C, and synthetic beta-carotene shows that natural vitamin E significantly reduced heart disease and is a wonderful dietary supplement for any person concerned about their heart and cardiovascular health. The primary end point of the study was to determine the prevention of either cardiovascular death or serious cardiovascular disease. Natural vitamin E showed an impressive and statistically significant 13% reduction. Natural vitamin E also showed improvement in secondary end points of the study, including a 22% reduction in heart attacks, a 27% reduction in strokes (31% when combined with vitamin C), and a 9% reduction in cardiovascular death. These results for natural vitamin E are nothing short of astounding as they used the gold standard of human testing!

In an absolutely unbelievable reporting of their own study information the authors erroneously concluded “There were no overall effects of ascorbic acid, vitamin E, or beta carotene on cardiovascular events among women at high risk for cardiovascular disease.” This is a flat out lie based on their own study data that they report in the American Medical Association’s Archives of Internal Medicine. They concocted this false and misleading conclusion by including the people who said they were supposed to be taking vitamin E but really didn’t take the vitamin E in the final statistical analysis. The study participants who actually took the natural vitamin E had the dramatic benefits listed in the first paragraph, which the authors failed to report in the study abstract. Instead, the authors fed a false and negatively slanted view of the study to the media, none of whom bothered to check the actual study. The media then proceeded to spread a false negative view of truly remarkable findings on vitamin E and heart health.

Taking a Closer Look at the Study Results

The following two paragraphs are what the study actually says about vitamin E. The first paragraph says that vitamin E did not do much of anything, which is what the authors reported. The second paragraph says that when they re-evaluated the Vitamin E data by removing people from the vitamin E group who failed to actually take the vitamin E, the results were extremely good. This is the important information about what natural vitamin E actually did. The authors didn’t tell the media about this and the media didn’t bother looking into the study.

Vitamin E

No differences were seen in the primary end point by randomized vitamin E assignment (RR, 0.94; 95% CI, 0.85-1.04 [P=.23]) (Table 2 and Figure 2), with no significant variation in the relative risk over time. We found a nonsignificant 16% reduction in total stroke, with a 21% reduction in ischemic stroke (P=.06) and an increase in hemorrhagic stroke based on small numbers. There was an overall 10% reduction in the combination of MI, stroke, and CVD death, with a nonsignificant decrease (P=.08) in benefit over time. No difference in total mortality by vitamin E group was found.

Censoring participants on noncompliance led to a significant 13% reduction in the primary end point (RR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.76-0.99 [P=.04]). Reductions in secondary study end points were also stronger, with a 22% reduction in MI (RR, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.58-1.06 [P=.11]), a 27% reduction in stroke (RR, 0.73; 95% CI, 0.54-0.98 [P=.04]), and a 9% reduction in CVD mortality (RR, 0.91; 95% CI, 0.66-1.25 [P=.55]). There was a 23% reduction in the combination of MI, stroke, or CVD death (RR, 0.77; 95% CI, 0.64-0.92 [P=.005]). Among those with prior CVD, the active vitamin E group experienced fewer major CVD events (RR, 0.89; 95% CI, 0.79-1.00 [P=.04]; P value for interaction, .07) (Table 3).

In order for a result to be statistically significant the P value must be less than .05. In this case the primary end point of the study, the 27% reduction in stroke, the 23% reduction in the combination of MI (heart attack), stroke, or CVD death, and the fewer major CVD events in those with a history of CVD were all statistically significant. These are the impressive results of the people who actually took the natural vitamin E.

Vitamin E has Been Wrongly Attacked Before

As I have pointed out in my previous writing, Vitamin E has been viciously and fraudulently attacked by powerful vested interests, especially researchers funded primarily by Big Pharma. This has nothing to do with real science, and everything to do with a media-backed Big Pharma PR machine trying to convince Americans to take toxic and health-deteriorating drugs instead of safe and effective vitamins. It is likely the study authors, researchers of the heavily Big Pharma-backed Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, were pressured into writing findings that negated vitamin E. Or else the study authors were totally biased and could not believe the spectacular vitamin E results.

In the current study the natural form of vitamin E used was d alpha tocopherol acetate at the dose of 600 IU every other day. Even this form of vitamin E could have been improved upon by using a full mixture of tocopherols or the truly superior tocotrienols. However, at least it was a high quality form of natural vitamin E that was used, unlike studies that used synthetic vitamin E and produced questionable outcomes. Consumers should always avoid synthetic vitamin E, which has an “l” after the “d”, so it looks like “dl alpha” on the label instead of “d alpha.”

Synthetic Beta Carotene did not Help the Heart – No Surprise

I would also like to point out that the synthetic beta carotene used in the study (Lurotin from the BASF, 50 mg every other day) is the same worthless compound found to increase lung cancer in smokers. This pathetic “vitamin” is produced by a German drug company that is actively participating to have vitamins regulated worldwide as well as to promote synthetic vitamins as no different than natural. Since the end of the 1930s BASF has been pouring millions of tons of coal tar-derived food coloring into our food supply, poisoning our citizens – with the blessings of the Big Pharma-owned FDA. The Germans like to synthesize vitamins from chemical sources, as their own country is so poor in natural resources that they can’t make anything from a real food source and thus can’t make a profit selling vitamins unless they are concocted from chemicals. Synthetic beta carotene is made by extracting benzene rings from acetylene gas, and then attaching the benzene rings together to form 100% all-trans-beta-carotene. There is no food source that contains 100% all-trans-beta-carotene.

One example of high quality natural beta carotene is the sea algae Dunaliella salinas, which contains a mixture of 9-cis-beta carotene as well as trans-beta-carotene along with related nutrients such as alpha-carotene, cryptoxanthin, and zeaxanthin. Natural source beta carotene contains a powerful complex of nutrients not present in synthetic beta carotene. Research shows that 9-cis-beta carotene transports much more efficiently in the body. My advice is to avoid synthetic beta carotene which can always be identified because the natural source of the beta carotene is not listed on the label.

Consumer Action is Needed

It is a shame that health-related politics, financial pressures, or researcher bias prevent the publishing of the true meaning of an important study, especially when the findings would cause millions of consumers to abandon dangerous drugs in favor of natural vitamin E. It is a shame that the media has been conditioned like Pavlovian dogs to spread Big Pharma sponsored anti-vitamin bad news as if it is the truth. It is also a shame that important studies fail to use the high quality forms of nutrients, proving only that synthetic garbage does not work. A combination of antioxidants from natural sources is primary dietary support for the reduction of heart disease and cancer, as well as naturally boosting the immune system – the science in this regard is overwhelmingly positive.

Unraveling the lies about the antioxidant study on vitamins E and C

A new study published in the August 13, 2007 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine found that vitamins E and C, when taken together, result in a significant reduction in the risk of strokes (31 percent) and heart attacks (22 percent). The study followed 8,171 women who were instructed to take relatively small amounts of these vitamins for more than nine years (600 IU of vitamin E, 500mg of vitamin C and 50mg of beta carotene were taken every other day — a very small dose according to most modern nutritionists).

Despite these encouraging findings about the positive impact of antioxidants on health, nearly all the headlines in the mainstream media today are proclaiming vitamins E and C to be useless. In classic doublespeak, one press release blares, “Vitamin C and Other Antioxidant Vitamins Provide No Protection from Cardiovascular Events.” This particular distortion comes from the drug-touting Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. BWH goes on to state, “researchers… have found that there is no evidence of benefit or risk from vitamins C, E or beta-carotene on cardiovascular events for women at a high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD).”

Other medical associations and pharmaceutical-affiliated groups are making similar pronouncements. Vitamins C and E, according to them, are nutritionally worthless. And they’re basing that conclusion on a study that actually showed the vitamins to be far better at preventing cardiovascular disease than any prescription drug!

How to lie with statistics

So how can anyone claim these vitamins are worthless when the study clearly shows a strong, significant health benefit in those who take the vitamins? It’s simple: the results of the study can be made to look poor by counting the results of all the people who didn’t take the vitamins!

Let me explain this again to make sure I’m communicating this properly: Overall, if you look at the entire group of women followed in this study, you find that cardiovascular protective benefits were only marginal: An 11 percent reduction in the risk of combined cardiovascular disease. But that benefit is diluted by the fact that it includes all the women who neglected to actually take the vitamins! If you include only the women who complied with taking the vitamins on a regular basis, the results increase substantially and become quite significant with a 31 percent reduction in the risk of stroke and 22 percent reduction of risk in heart attacks. In other words, those women who actually took vitamins E and C experienced substantial benefits from doing so. Those who neglected to take the vitamins, not surprisingly, had little or no benefit.

Pushers of pharmaceuticals, of course, want to make vitamins look bad. So they quote the results that include people who never even took the vitamins. “See?” they say. “The benefits aren’t there.” Of course they aren’t! It’s like taking a room full of a hundred hungry children, handing fifty of them a large sandwich, then declaring that sandwiches don’t work as food because half the room is still hungry.

That these figures would even be quoted as something resembling “scientific medicine” is laughable. The defenders of pharmaceuticals have become so desperate to discredit antioxidants and nutrition in general that they have now resorted to quoting study results from people who didn’t even take the vitamins! I’m not sure if this strategy is brilliant or idiotic: It’s brilliant because the mainstream media swallows the story hook, line and sinker (journalists aren’t very skeptical anymore…). It’s idiotic because it’s based on a logic gap so large you could drive a circus convoy through it. If you’re going to test the effectiveness of something, it only makes sense that you have to exclude the results of those people who didn’t take it.

Notice that with drug studies, researchers routinely exclude those who did not comply with taking the drug. They don’t test a drug on 1000 people, but count the results on 2000 people, half of which never took the drug. They only track results based on those who actually took the drugs. It’s common sense.

Desperate to discredit vitamins

But when profits are at stake, and there’s an industry-wide propaganda campaign to push onto the public, common sense gets thrown out the window. Scientific scrutiny turns to wishy washy statistical foolery disguised as authoritative proclamations about nutrition. This, in turn, quickly devolves into nutritional nonsense. The message from industry is very clear: Don’t take vitamins! And if they have to lie with statistics by making a positive study look negative, they’re more than willing to step up to the plate and state the indefensible, almost as if they lived in some alternate universe where the laws of logic have all been reversed.

In fact, the message from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital is quite clear. As JoAnn Manson, MD, chief of Preventive Medicine at BWH and principal investigator of WACS said (with my translation in brackets), “This research underscores the importance of focusing on proven methods for preventing cardiovascular disease, including physical activity, healthy diet, controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol [i.e. using pharmaceuticals], maintaining healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco.”

In other words, she’s saying:

  • Antioxidants are “unproven.”
  • Cardiovascular disease can only be prevented, in part, by using pharmaceuticals.
  • We should stop spending time on nutritional supplements.

(In modern medical lingo, any statement about “controlling high blood pressure” or “controlling high cholesterol” or even “controlling blood sugar” actually means taking pharmaceuticals to control those numbers. So when researchers say that people need to “control their high blood pressure” what they’re really saying is that people should take high blood pressure drugs.)

It’s a message that might as well have been announced from the Big Pharma Glee Club, or the FDA cheerleading squad.

Pushing the pro-Pharma propaganda

Sadly, the mainstream media will buy this distortion, reprint it, and thereby spread disinformation to the public which is already half scared of vitamins thanks to all the other fear tactics being pushed by today’s oppressive medical system. But let’s get down to reality here for a moment, shall we? Drugs have no natural place in the human body, period. There is no disease caused by a deficiency of pharmaceuticals, and most of the drugs being marketed today are pushed under the most ridiculous advertising claims and distorted medical “science.” Properly-prescribed, FDA-approved drugs are right now the 3rd leading cause of death in America, and even those individuals who aren’t killed by the drugs suffer rapidly declining health when taking them. (Have you ever seen anyone take prescription drugs for a few months and get so healthy that they stopped needing the drugs? Of course not.)

Nutrition, on the other hand, is 100% biocompatible with the human body, and nutrition produces exceptional results in restoring and supporting human health. Nobody has ever been killed by antioxidants, or superfoods, or vitamins E and C. Not a single person. Billions of people have been helped by these substances, and nutrition, in fact, is the answer to our health care problems. If we taught people the truth about nutrition, they wouldn’t need prescription drugs! That’s precisely why nutrition must be attacked, by the way: Vitamins threaten the profits of drug companies because vitamins and dietary supplements actually work to prevent disease and keep people healthy!

Anyone who thinks drugs are the answer — and that antioxidants are useless — is probably suffering from the cognitive impairment side effects of drugs they’re on right now. You’d have to be truly out of your mind to think that plant-based nutrition has no role in human health and that only pharmaceuticals can prevent disease.

Yet this remains the dominant mindset in conventional medicine today. It is a mindset based on deliberate falsehoods, scientific distortion and outright lies. And right now, you’re witnessing yet another attempt to disinform the public about the promise of antioxidants.

Personally, I take antioxidants every day. I also eat raw foods, drink superfood smoothies and avoid all prescription drugs. And I have yet to meet any person on pharmaceuticals who even compares to the level of health that I (and many others like me) experience on a daily basis. You show me somebody taking twelve prescription drugs, and I’ll show you someone with a toxic liver, impaired brain function, stressed kidneys and unhealthy blood. Drugs don’t make people healthy. And most drugs, by the way, actually deplete the body of essential nutrients.

Remember: The first thing that goes when you take pharmaceuticals is your mind, and with that you lose your ability to think clearly. That’s when the drug companies, hospitals, FDA and everybody else depending on the current drug marketing racket steps in and tries to convince you to stop taking nutritional supplements and surrender to a (short) life of pharmaceuticals.

Pushing drugs and abandoning the people

For the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, I think this action we’re seeing today is yet another example of how organizations that once accomplished meaningful work have apparently sold their souls to Big Pharma and now operate as little more than drug company front groups. Gee, I wonder where their funding comes from?

To show you just one tiny example of how closely tied Brigham and Women’s Hospital is to the financial influence of drug companies, consider the bio of one senior investigator working at the hospital: Christopher P. Cannon, M.D., F.A.C.C. According to this author disclosure, Christopher has received all the following research grants (all of which are greater than $10,000 each, with the actual amounts not disclosed):

Merck/Schering Plough Partnership, Significant (>= $10,000)
AstraZeneca , Significant (>= $10,000)
Glaxo Smith Kline, Significant (>= $10,000)
Sanofi-aventis/Bristol-Myers Squibb Partnership, Significant (>= $10,000)
Schering Plough, Significant (>= $10,000)
Merck, Significant (>= $10,000)

… and all that is from just one person. Do you really think a hospital staffed by doctors receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars from drug companies is going to acknowledge that cardiovascular disease can be prevented without drugs by simply taking low-cost antioxidant vitamins?

Of course not. And that’s why their press release about the antioxidant study is, in my opinion, a fantastic example of outrageous intellectual dishonesty in medicine today. These people are so intoxicated by drug money influence that they calculate statistics like drunken sailors and practice medicine like quacks. We would all do well to flee from their dishonest proclamations and get back to the basics of preventing disease with nutrition, not treating it with high-profit synthetic chemicals.
